What we treat with EPAT® shockwave

A healing jump-start for stubborn tendon & soft-tissue pain

Trinity Rehab is one of the few outpatient PT practices in NJ and PA with EPAT® on-site. Sessions take about 10–15 minutes, most people need just three to five — and many feel a difference within the first few.

Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain

The Mayo Clinic identifies shockwave (ESWT) as an effective option for chronic plantar fasciitis that hasn't responded to conservative treatment — research support is strongest here.

How we get you better

Your EPAT® recovery plan

Every patient gets a personalized plan. Here's how our board-certified therapists use EPAT® to get stubborn pain finally moving in the right direction.

Evaluation & First Session

A one-on-one evaluation confirms EPAT is right for your condition — then treatment can start right away. Gel, a handheld applicator, gentle pressure waves: about 10–15 minutes, no anesthesia, no incisions.

Visit 1

A Short Series of Sessions

Most people need three to five sessions spaced about a week apart — many feel a difference within the first few. EPAT is paired with strengthening and stretching, because it works best alongside a full therapy program.

Sessions 2–5

Healing That Keeps Working

EPAT keeps working after your visits end — the fullest benefit usually develops over the following weeks as new blood flow and cell activity repair the injured tissue.

Good to know

Quick answers before you book

How many shockwave sessions will I need? +
Most people need a short series of three to five sessions spaced about a week apart — each takes about 10–15 minutes. Many patients notice improvement after just a few sessions, with lasting results developing over several weeks.
Is EPAT shockwave therapy FDA-cleared? +
Yes. EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive technology used to treat a range of musculoskeletal and soft-tissue conditions — with no anesthesia, no incisions, and no downtime.
Does shockwave therapy hurt? +
Most patients feel mild pressure or tapping during the session — discomfort is minimal and temporary. Afterward you might have mild, temporary soreness for a day or two, similar to how you might feel after a good workout.
Which conditions respond best to EPAT? +
Research support is strongest for plantar fasciitis and tendon-related conditions like tennis elbow. During your evaluation, your therapist will tell you honestly whether EPAT is a good fit for your specific diagnosis — it isn't right for everyone, and we'll say so if a different approach will serve you better.
Can EPAT replace physical therapy exercises? +
No — it works best combined with a full therapy program that includes strengthening, stretching, and functional training. That's exactly how we use it: EPAT jump-starts healing while your personalized plan rebuilds the strength that keeps the pain from coming back.
Do I need a doctor's referral or prescription? +
Not in New Jersey — you can book directly with us today (it's called direct access). In Pennsylvania most patients can also start without a referral; some insurance plans ask for one as treatment continues, and we'll check yours and handle the paperwork for you.
Will my insurance cover physical therapy? +
We're in-network with Medicare, Horizon BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and many more. Before your first visit we verify your exact benefits — copay, deductible, visit limits — for free, so there are no surprises.
How fast can I get an appointment? +
Most new patients are seen the same week. Tell us if you're in a lot of pain and we'll do everything we can to get you in sooner.
What happens at my first visit? +
A one-on-one evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy — typically a full hour. They'll assess your movement, strength, and the injured area, find what's actually driving the pain, and tell you honestly whether EPAT fits your diagnosis. In most cases, treatment starts the same day.

Don't let stubborn pain win

EPAT® is often a good fit when pain has stuck around despite rest, activity changes, or a course of traditional therapy. Early treatment means faster relief, and your closest Trinity Rehab is minutes away.
