Good to know

Quick answers before you book

Can sciatica be treated without surgery? +
In most cases, yes. Conservative care is the recommended first-line approach for sciatica — including pain that comes from a herniated disc, a pinched nerve, or piriformis syndrome. Targeted manual therapy, nerve glides, decompression techniques, and progressive strengthening relieve the nerve pressure; surgery is generally considered only when conservative care hasn't achieved enough.
Is physical therapy better than shots or surgery for sciatica? +
For most people, conservative care comes first. Physical therapy treats the root cause of the nerve irritation rather than just masking the pain, and many patients get lasting relief without injections or surgery. Your therapist will be honest about what they're seeing and tell you if a physician's input makes sense.
What if my sciatica is from a herniated disc? +
Physical therapy is often the right first step. For most patients, hands-on care, decompression techniques, and targeted exercise relieve the disc-related pressure on the sciatic nerve — and ease the leg pain, numbness, and tingling — without surgery. If anything points to a problem that needs a physician, we'll tell you and help you get the right care.
What if I don't know what's causing my leg pain? +
That's exactly what the evaluation is for. Your therapist tests your back, hip, and leg mobility, strength, and movement patterns to pinpoint what's irritating the nerve — no MRI required to start. If anything needs imaging or a physician's input, we'll tell you and point you in the right direction.
Do I need a doctor's referral or prescription? +
Not in New Jersey — you can book directly with us today (it's called direct access). In Pennsylvania most patients can also start without a referral; some insurance plans ask for one as treatment continues, and we'll check yours and handle the paperwork for you.
Will my insurance cover physical therapy? +
We're in-network with Medicare, Horizon BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and many more. Before your first visit we verify your exact benefits — copay, deductible, visit limits — for free, so there are no surprises.
How fast can I get an appointment? +
Most new patients are seen the same week. Tell us if you're in a lot of pain and we'll do everything we can to get you in sooner.
What happens at my first visit? +
A one-on-one evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy — typically a full hour. They'll test your back, hip, and leg mobility and strength, find what's actually irritating the nerve, and build your personal plan. In most cases, treatment starts the same day.

Don't wait for your sciatica to get worse

The longer a nerve stays pinched, the harder it is to fully recover. Early treatment means faster relief, and your closest Trinity Rehab is minutes away.
